Description
Thessaloniki to Nymfaio – Private Day Trip
Nymfaio, is an intersting and very differently looking town. In fact, when we will arrive, you wouldn’t have thought to find such a place in Greece. It will gave you the feeling of being in a whole different part of the world. Most likely the grey stones and bare hills surrounding the town will gave you the feeling of being somewhere in Northern Europe.
The village is quite old. It was founded in 1358 by Vlachs (Eastern Romance-speaking people), fleeing into the mountains after fights with the Ottomans. Eventually, the town grew to be a center for silversmiths. They practiced their craft in these pretty houses. Nowadays, it’s mostly a tourist town yet in a very positive way. There’s also a bear reserve, the Arcturos Bear Sanctuary. It’s just a kilometre walking from the town. They help bears that suffered immensely by the human hand. They are treated well in these sanctuaries, which at their turn rely on visitors and volunteers. There’s also a Wolf Sanctuary, a bit farther down into the valley, however.
Make sure that when you visit Nymfaio outside summer, you have warm clothing with you. The bear sanctuary, for example, is at 1.350 metres altitude and it gets cold!

Local delicacies
During your stay at Nymfaio taste all the delicious local dishes in the various tavernas. Savour the neveska dish which is made with layers of potatoes, finely chopped pork and melted cheese. Don’t miss the locals’ favourite fish called grivadi, from the nearby lakes, cooked in a number of ways. The Macedonian wine and tsipouro will excellently accompany any recipe of the area you will choose to taste.
In the area, there’s lots to see. We recommend the town Siatista, but also Florina or Kastoria. The whole of Northern Greece is packed with sights.
WORTH TO SEE IN SIATISTA
Siatista Paleontological Museum
The Paleontological Museum houses finds of the area: fossilized tusks, parts of mammoths, rhinos, various rocks and minerals.
Siatista Botanical Museum
The Botanical Museum has been operating for 20 years, is unique in Greece and includes over 700 paintings of flowers and plants and over 500 rare butterflies and reptiles from the area of Bourinos (where the nature lover finds his paradise).
Traditional Cellars (Katogia)
Guided tour of the traditional cellars (katogia) that are spread throughout the city. Here we will learn the secrets of Siatist wine and you will get to know the famous “Liasto” (sunny) wine that is produced in a traditional and organic way. The producers themselves will undertake to introduce you to all stages of production, a process that remains unchanged over the centuries.
WORTH TO SEE IN FLORINA
Hellenistic City of Florina
The Hellenistic city of Florina is located in the southern part of the modern city of Florina, on the slopes of the northern slope of the densely planted hill of Agios Panteleimon, as it is named after the homonymous church located in the area. The inhabitation of the city must have started in the 4th c. BC as evidenced by the older pottery and ended with a fire at the beginning of the 1st c. BC However, the discovery of pottery of the 2nd millennium BC is indicative of the existence of an installation in this area from prehistoric times.
In the excavation of the Hellenistic city of Florina was found a large number of pottery of various kinds (paintings, bowls, filters, perfume jars, water jugs, lamps, etc.) simply unpainted, with black paint and with embossed decoration or with adjective colors. In several of the relief vessels the same construction matrices are recognized, with relief vessels from Pella, the capital of the Macedonian kingdom.
There are many objects of worship, such as the censers and the clay idols of deities of the Greek pantheon (Aphrodite, Artemis, Hermes, Mother of the Gods). The large number of textile weights proves a developed textile industry, while the large number of agricultural tools and the large quantities of stored grains testify to the involvement in agriculture and various types of household items (metal processing, ceramics, choroplasty, etc.).
The findings of the excavation of the Hellenistic city of Florina are exhibited on the 2nd floor of the Archaeological Museum of Florina.
Vigla – Pisoderi Ski Center
Through an enchanting route, overlooking the green slopes of the mountains and at a distance of 19 km from Florina and 178 km from Thessaloniki at Vigla, is the organized ski center Vigla – Pisoderi at an altitude of 1650 m. It is the only ski resort center in Greece located on a highway with the result that the road is open throughout the winter providing easy and safe access to visitors.
The Olympic standard ski resort has nine slopes (13 km in total) which serve all categories of ski athletes and are approved by the F.I.S. (International Ski Federation).
In summer, visitors can go horseback riding, tour the beautiful mountain trails while the area is ideal for lovers of mountaineering and mountain biking.
