Description

Kassandra Peninsula of Halkidiki, Private Round Tour

KASSANDRA PENINSULA

Like a ship at anchor, the Kassandra peninsula patiently awaits every summer the waves of thousands of holidaymakers, in order to take them to the beaches they have dreamed about all winter.
The most densely populated of the three peninsulas – in addition to its many kilometres long indented coastline and crystal clear waters – offers a vibrant nightlife. Many bars are arrayed along the coastline or in the villages, while the area also features spas, large scale hotel facilities and hosts two major festivals, “Sani” and “Siviris”.

Kassandra is at the westernmost tip of Halkidiki, close to Thessaloniki. Entering into Kassandra makes quite and impression, as it is connected to Halkidiki through the bridge at Nea Potidea, the first village visitors encounter. In fact, the Kassandra peninsula is an island separated from the mainland by the Potidea canal, which offers a spectacular panoramic view, especially at sunset.
It is worth mentioning that Kassandra used to be named Flegra, which means “place of fire”. According to Greek mythology, the area was home to giants and became a battleground during the era when they tried to banish the gods from Mt Olympus.

Highlights

  • The Tower at the traditional Village of Nea Fokea
The Tower, a remarkably preserved old Byzantine fortress which was build in 1407 and the sanctification of Apostle Paul, a passage opened through the rock and ending into an underground chamber, which are composing the historical indetity of Nea Fokea.
The footsteps of St Paul in Halkidiki (agiasma)
On the eastern side of Nea Fokea, the known “Agiasma” (Holly water) of Apostle Paul is one of the most appealing and interesting landmarks. Just across the road from the small fishing harbor of Nea Fokea, there is an arch, leading to the cave’s entrance. The rock work and heavy wooden door evokes the time when Apostle Paul walked that very same path, going through the entry and down the steps leading into the place where he lived. The story goes that St Paul hid here to keep safe from his persecutors during his missionary journey. It is an underground corridor of about 10 meters in length, which has been carved on the natural rock and ends in a rectangular underground chamber. It is probably an ancient burial construction that, during the Byzantine period, was transformed into a church. The chamber’s walls had been painted thus, most of the paintings worn out due to humidity. Tradition says that Apostle Paul was teaching at Ierissos when haunted and with his life in danger he went into a hole of the earth. Then, passing through an underground corridor, he arrived at Kassandra and came out at the chamber of the “agiasma”.
  • Afytos: A Tour at the Stone Balcony of Halkidiki
Afitos means … beautiful! Afytos stands out amongst the many villages in the area for its beauty as well as its historical and natural significance. The village has managed to preserve its original charm, with cobblestone streets, and stone built houses that can make visitors feel like they have stepped back in time. Undoubtedly, you will come across the jewel of the village, the church of Agios Dimitrios from 1859 and then after a short walk you will reach the main promenade, with a stunning view of the Gulf below. This one is a bit different from other seaside villages however, as it gives you a panoramic view of the water and cliffs below.
  • Hanioti is a picturesque settlement, underneath the hills abounding with conifer trees and a long beach, which makes it one of the most beautiful resort areas of Kassandra. The beach features both pebble and sand, with nicely manicured park next to it. Active people can enjoy various water sports in the turquoise waters.
