Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the capital of the island of Cyprus. According to Greek mythology, Nicosia was a siren and one of the daughters of Acheloos and Melpomeni. Her name is translated as “White Substance”.

The capital of the island offers one of the highest living standards in the world. Nicosia is home to the University of Cyprus, which is public and 4 other universities.

In ancient times the city of Nicosia was called Ledra and was one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus. As the capital of Cyprus for more than 1000 years, Nicosia has been occupied by the Franks, the Venetians, the Ottomans, and the British. Since ancient times, the city of Nicosia has been the centre of Cyprus, both from a geographic point of view, as well as from transport and economic. This fact made Nicosia the governing city of Cyprus, since it later became the capital of the island.

• Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement (World Heritage Site)
  The settlement represents the history of the Neolithic period in Cyprus. The ancient site of Choirokoitia dates back to the 6th millennium BC. It lies in the domain of the village from which it takes its name in the Larnaka district on the west bank of the Maroni River overlooking the south coast, 6 kilometres from the sea.The settlement’s only entrance – a stairway integrated within a stone massif that lay against the exterior face of the settlement’s enclosure wall, can be traced for more than 180 metres. Perfectly functional as an entrance and exit, this stairway provided a solution to the problem posed by the fact that the settlement stood 2 metres higher than the surrounding area. Protected by this wall, the houses were crowded together, separated only by narrow strips of land that were used as passage ways and for the disposal of rubbish.

  Lefkara are also well known for their silversmith work. Lefkara men are blessed with a sense of art decorate with special artistry the censers, the rose water canisters, the silver teaspoons, jewelleries, church items and so many other silver work of art. The art of silverware, still flourishing today in Lefkara, offers fine works of art to silver lovers everywhere.

  Loukoumia “Ta orea Lefkara”
  One of the oldest crafts of Cyprus that was founded in 1904 is the craft of Loukoumia called “Ta orea Lefkara”. Founder of the craft was Theodore Kramvidis, a ground breaking pioneer and entrepreneur who learned this art as worker for four years in a similar factory in Alexandria, Egypt. Theodore, when he felt that he had gained sufficient experience, he returned back in Lefkara and founded together with his brother this magnificent craft at his villahe, which craft it’s continues its operations until now and passing successively the business to his nephew, Stelios Kramvidi and later to his son Stelios Theodore.   the following varieties of sweet delights are produced: orange flavoured, rose, bergamot, lemon, strawberry, apricot, cherry, banana , vanilla, chocolate, ouzo, mint and loukoumia that contain almond and pistachios. The raw materials for producing loukoumia are the following: sugar, starch, citric acid, almonds, pistachios and permitted flavours. The visitor can see the making of these delights and buy loukoumia in the house of crafts in the main street of the village where loukoumia are offered for sale. Loukoumia are known throughout Cyprus for its fine taste and superb quality. They have won awards at various
  exhibitions in Cyprus, Thessaloniki, Tel-Aviv and England.
