Description
Corinth Canal and Kalavrita – Private Day Trip from Athens
Kalavrita is a small mountainous town on the northern side of Peloponnese.
Surrounded by beautiful landscape, Kalavrita is a popular winter destination in Greece due to the ski center on the slopes of Mount Helmos. A drive around there will bring you many interesting sights, including the Monastery of Mega Spileo, carved against the slopes of a mountain, the historical Monastery of Agia Lavra where the Greek Revolution of 1821 was first declared and the miraculous Cave of the Lakes. The most important spot in the history of Kalavrita was in December 1943, when the Nazi troops burnt down the village and killed all male inhabitants. A Holocaust Monument is set on a hill above the village to commemorate this tragedy.
TRIP PLAN – ROUTE
- Athens
You will get picked up from your hotel, apartment, Airbnb, Athens airport, or Piraeus port - Isthmus (Canal) Corinth
Departing Athens, we will drive towards the west of it and you will continue your journey through the highway. One of the most impressive parts of the scenery will be the unique and historical location, between mount Aegaleo and the island of Salamis, where the naval battle of Salamis was fought, in 480 BC, with Xerxes viewing everything from the top of the mountain and the Persians receiving a devastating loss from the Athenians. Continuing the drive, you will pass the valley of Megara many centuries old, filled with groves of pistachio and olive trees with the view of the impressive mountains of the Peloponnese on the one side in the background. You will have a short stop by the Corinth canal, which separates the mainland from the peninsula of the Peloponnese and connects the Ionian Sea with the Aegean Sea. There you will have the chance to walk over the bridge and enjoy breathtaking views, taking as many photographs as you would like to. - Xylokastro Traditional Village
Xylokastro is maybe a new and unheard-of destination for visitors outside of Greece, but for Greeks, particularly the Athenians absolutely know and love this region. They go to ski in the winter, to swim the gorgeous Peloponnese beaches in the summer and to relax at the lakes all year round. The region of Xylokastro on mainland Greece is a true hidden gem for foreign visitors. In this small area in the north of the Peloponnese, you can visit both mountains and the beach on the same day since from one, the other is easily reachable in under an hour. Getting to know Xylokastro is about immersing yourself in rural life, enjoying amazingly fresh food and experiencing incredible local wines.
- Zachlorou Traditional Village
This mountain village is mainly famous for the magnificent Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo, which is located in a close distance. Around 20-25 km far from Kalavrita, this beautiful village is located right on the banks of Vouraikos River. The village has many unoccupied stone houses, built before the 1950s, which give visitors a glimpse into life of people during those times. Its people are mostly farmers and produce a lot of fruits such as watermelons and figs, vegetables and some dairy products. The famous Diakofto-Kalavrita railway makes a stop at this village. This place is also recommended for hiking. - Kalavrita Traditional Town
